It's been a while since I read the books, but as I recall, there seemed to be a hint that Earth Lord's wife was either having an affair with his partner, or at least his partner wanted that. And, as time went on, it seemed as though Earth Lord and Wind Warrior were becoming...chummy. I wonder if I'm misremembering that or reading too much into it, or was it something DeFalco had planned to explore?

The character Skyhawk was written to not be liked very much, but I kinda felt sorry a little bit for him - of the three, he was a little underpowered. Earth Lord was almost a literal mountain. Stronger even than most of Marvel's Heavy-Hitters, like Thing, Wonder Man, Colossus, Doc Samson, etc. Yet, anything Skyhawk could do, Wind Warrior could also do. He didn't really bring anything special to the group.

A while back, I created a setting involving Earth Force. I had them relocate to Washington state (interestingly enough, it's mentioned in the 50 State Initiative that Skyhawk DID move to Washington state). It occurred to me that 2 of the 3 character's powers were based on the classic elements, so, I decided to redo Skyhawk and gave him the ability to shoot fireballs (changing his name to Firehawk) and giving him a full set of wings, rather than the feathers running along his arms - not sure how he could effectively fight like that. Then, just for funsies, and to complete the elements, the Atlantean, Andromeda, joined Earth Force.

Anyway, just a peak into one corner of my Marvel Setting (Earth 9653).]]>

That houserule was a quick&dirty conversion from how Savage Worlds handles sorcery in its super hero variant, and hadn't been play-tested but for a single convention one-shot. There are probably still a lot of holes to poke into when someone sets their mind on breaking the power, or more elegant ways to handle the basic idea that are more in tune with how MSH handles things.

I also am not crazy about how this homebrew version allows a caster to swap his spells around for whatever the situation may call for. Seems like the pc would have way to much versatility with no penalty.
That is very much the point of that house-rule. Super-Sorcerers are incredibly versatile and can come up with the oddly specific power they need to solve the problem of the week, but don't have the raw power to go toe-to-toe with a regular superhero who specializes into the same niche.

I see the triple cost as a way of preventing a Sorcerer from becoming OP. However, I was thinking that since it's a multipower, taking it should forbid any other power selections. Since it can simulate having a number of powers anyway.
Yes, but taking other powers allows a sorcerer to have a couple of magical trinkets... maybe not Eye of Agamotto, but possibly a cloak of levitation or a ring of invisibility or staff of speaking to dead folks... or what have you.
There is also Scarlet Witch, who combines hex manipulation and other mutant powers with spellcasting, and plenty of other heroes and villains who back up their magic with regular powers, or magic items, or technology. A blanket ban of combining Super Sorcery with regular powers would make a lot of characters impossible.]]>

Power stunts are quite powerful. No its not like developing an entirely new superpower but its still hella useful, so there show be a significant cost. And you can easily wrack up a couple of 100 Karma in even a low tier game.

Where I make my changes is Karma for advancement. Sure superheroes before the 90s levels up pretty darn slowly which I think the game is intended to reflect but I like to give my players a chance for a sense of forward accomplishment. So it costs significantly less to advance (but still not a speed run to godhood) and the spending of Karma on stunts doesnt feel like a life changing sacrifice of character progression.

As an optional rule pehaps a lowering of the cost shows a greater mastery as you succeed.

100 Karma for the red attemts
50 for the yellow
25 for the green

And if using the blue results perhaps double the cost for the next attempt or one success is lost (if you are using the revised universal table).]]>

I sometimes think it goes too far. Magneto I think is a good example of that... another is Sebastian Shaw who went from absorbing kinetic energy and growing physically stronger to being able to absorb any kind of energy, such as when he fought depowered Hercules who attacked him with a magic sword that could cut through anything and he essentially ignored the attack and it was handwaved away as "It's all energy."

I don't know, it just feels like power stunts can definitely go too far... like if someone tried to power stunt Hulk's Alter Ego power to transform into Captain America because hey, that would be using the power different than intended. Or if Thor tried to use Weather Control communicate with animals.]]>

Sebastian is a young man born in 1980 and growing up one of his favorite tv shows was Highlander the series. Sebastian was fascinated by the show especially because the last name of the hero and his were almost identical. As Sebastian got older, he began to take Martial arts. Shortly after he graduated High School, Sebastian joined the military and eventually became an Army ranger. During his service, he was approached by higher ups that were (or so they said) very impressed with his service and training and offered him the chance to become part of a new breed of super soldier. Sebastian jumped at the chance. What he did not know was these experiments were actually being conducted by the secret empire and were designed to not only turn him into a super soldier, but to turn him into an assassin in the tune of the Winter Soldier. For 3 years, Sebastian was subjected to inhuman and cruel experiments, and in the end, he was granted increased strength speed and healing. As a test of the procedures and control, Sebastian was sent on his first mission, to kill Professor Rasputin Mikelson and recover his notes and experiments on Perpetual energy then destroy the lab and all evidence. Sebastian was dispatched and in the course of his mission was about to strike and something stopped him. Some vestigial left-over memory prevented him from killing the professor and instead managed to avert the killing blow and instead struck the perpetual energy device he was to acquire. The explosion somehow directed all of the energy into Sebastian and permeated every single cell of his body. After regaining consciousness, Sebastian saw that Professor Mikelson was still alive and actually was helping him. Explaining to him what happened, they vowed to work together and to bring down, A.I.M, T.H.E.M, Hydra and The Secret Empire. Thus, Sebastian began a new training regimen designed to hone his now even more enhanced abilities and his new ones such as his psionic weaponry and his slowed aging. Sebastian trained harder than ever to become a master of his psionic swords and patterned himself after his hero Duncan Macleod of the clan Macleod. Finally, they were ready to start taking down their enemies.]]>

I think you have to pay at the time of each attempt. At least that's how it would work in my game.

I do believe that is the original rules.

My suggested modification is that you can attempt it whenever, but you only pay the karma on a success. Otherwise, I was not modifying the rules as I was going for the minimal change route. Thus one might have to try 14 or 20 times, but using my suggested modification means that the player will only pay 1100 karma per power stunt, not more (like was possible in the original rules).

Given that buying a new power is 3000+starting rank karma (iirc), power stunts are cheaper.

Maybe the total cost should be rounded to 1000, just for the easy math and the easy association that 3 power stunts are equal to a new power, thus giving a baseline for comparison?]]>

Where it will suck is with a low powered character without much karma and therefore not much chance of shifting the needle. But on the other hand, maybe that is a correct built in balance? There's a reason there was a persistent Spider-Man comic book and not one for say Paladin or some other schlub.]]>

Training montage after a big defeat would make more sense - like Spider-Man first making his rubber suit to fight Electro. But there was an inventive realism to Ditko Spider-Man so he's probably a bad example.

The high cost and repetitive requirements always read to me like, "we don't really want change." :)]]>

(Power Stunts) https://classicmarvelforever.com/phorum/read.php?9,85590,85590#msg-85590
Based on my recollection, each time one tries to succeed at a new Stunt the following happens:
  1. Judge decides if Stunt is allowed
  2. First attempt = Red result
  3. Second and third attempt = Yellow result
  4. Fourth + attempt = Green result

Each attempt costs 100 karma, succeed or fail.

On the eleventh successful Stunt attempt, the trick is permanently learned. Thus a Power Stunt costs a minimum of 1100 karma, with no upper cap on the maximum amount one has to spend due to failures. Might be 1200, might be 3000... or more.

As a player, this uncertainty always bugged me.

The suggested alternate rule is to only pay when the goal is met, thus fixing the cost of learning a Power Stunt at 1100 karma total.

In line with the existing rules, that could be after each success pay the 100 karma, or for those who prefer a "learn more from failure than success" style, pay after each failure. Either way, after the eleventh occurrence of meeting the goal and only paying 1100 karma, the Stunt is mastered.

Thoughts?]]>
