Personality |
|||||||||||
Marc Spector was compelled to act as a hero due to guilt and disgust over his past life. During his period as Grant and Lockley, he was a true multiple personality, with serious mental problems. He truly believed Khonshu was responsible for his ressurection, and talked to the moon-god regularly. As the years went by, he became more and more sane, eventually curing himself of his multiple personalities. Spector was very loyal to his friends, and those he cared about. He never stopped loving Marlene, despite the ups and downs of their long relationship. As Moon Knight, Spector was a loner, preferring to work with his select group of confidantes, rather than large groups of heroes like the Avengers. Despite his financial success, Spector cared very little for wealth. More important to him were his activities as Moon Knight, which he always saw as a way of atonement for past sins. |

Personal History |
|||||||||||
Marc Spector was the son of rabbi Elias Spector, a noted European Hebrew scholar. As Marc grew older, he rejected his father's way of life, becoming a heavyweight boxer. Afterwards, Spector joined the U.S. Marines and was trained as a commando. He then became a liason to the CIA, resigning after a few years to become a mercenary soldier, fighting in three African wars and five South American revolutions. It was in Africa that Marc met Jean-Paul DuChamp, whom he nicknamed "Frenchie". DuChamp become Spector's most trusted confidante and constant companion. At the peak of his mercenary career, Spector was second in command to Roald Bushman, a terrorist for hire who had his face tatooed to resemble a death mask. While fighting rebel forces in the Sudan south of the Egyptian border, Spector learned that Bushman planned to loot a nearby archaeological dig. Already believing he was working on the wrong side, Spector decided to leave Bushman that night. However, when American archaeologist Dr. Peter Alraune attempted to stab Bushman in the back to preserve the site's treasures, Spector instinctively stopped him. Bushman then savagely murdered Dr. Alraune in front of Spector. Warning the archaeologist's daughter, Marlene, to get to safety, Spector confronted Bushman in personal combat. He was defeated, and Bushman left him out in the desert to die.
Spector staggered determinedly back to the dig, but collapsed a short distance from it. He was carried to a shelter by adherents of the ancient Egyptian religion, but it was too late to save his life. Spector lay dead before Marlene Alraune for nearly a minute, at the foot of an ancient statue of Khonshu, Egyptian god of the moon. Then, Spector's heart inexplicably began beating again. Delirious, he attributed his revival to Khonshu, and declared himself the moon's knight of vengeance. Draping himself in a white cloth that had preserved the statue from the desert sands, Spector singlehandedly destroyed Bushman's organization in that part of the world. He then took Frenchie, Marlene, and the statue of Khonshu back with him to America.
After months of deliberation, Spector decided to adopt the costumed identity of Moon Knight in order to use his acquired wealth and resources to wage war against criminals and terrorists. Frenchie became his pilot, cofidante and special agent. Marlene became his confidante and paramour.
Learning of a Los Angeles based group of corrupt businessmen calling themselves the Committee, Spector sent Frenchie to infiltrate the group, posing as a French businessman. When the Committee became interested in using Jack Russell, a local werewolf, as an agent of terror, Frenchie recommended Spector for the job of capturing the beast. Frenchie provided the Committee with Spector's Moon Knight costume, pretending to have created the identity for the job. Spector, as Moon Knight, found and brought Russell to the Committee, but then set him free and brought a temporary halt to the Committee's operations.
Shortly after, having parlayed the money he had earned as a mercenary into a fortune by shrewd investments in the stock market, Spector adopted the identity of millionaire Steven Grant. He bought a mansion on Long Island for use as a base of operations in his war against crime. Seeking to travel incognito along the ordinary walks of life, he also created the identity of cab driver Jake Lockley. As Lockley, he assembled a network of street informants and aides.
Moon Knight led a successful career as a crimefighter in the New York area. However, the strain of maintaining his four seperate identities began to take its toll. Spector began believing Grant to be his true self, which was encouraged by Marlene, who hated Spector and loved the man he had become. It took a series of nervous breakdowns for Spector to realize what he was doing to himself. He finally retired all of his identities, including Moon Knight, and set to concentrating on his true identity of Marc Spector. He legally transferred Grant's fortune to Marc Spector, and became a world-travelling dealer of fine art.
A series of events led to his re-adopting the Moon Knight identity, along with a new set of Egyptian weapons (which were later revealed to have been designed by the Avenger known as Hawkeye, during a time-travelling adventure). Marlene left him after this reversion, and Spector resumed his Moon Knight activities full-time. Seeking to have a greater impact as a crimefighter, Moon Knight briefly joined the West Coast Avengers, but became a solo agent again soon after.
He returned to New York, eventually using his wealth to establish SpectorCorp. During this period, he adopted a suit of armor and many new weapons. His longtime friend, Jean-Paul DuChamp was revealed to be a descendant of an ancient order called the Knights Templar, developed super-powers and took the name Bloodline. A rogue Templar called Seth the Immortal attempted to steal Marc Spector's resources, and launched an extensive campaign against the Kinghts Templar and Moon Knight. Marc Spector was revealed to be a descendent of Seth, and fought a final battle against the immortal villain. In the end, Moon Knight sacrificed himself to save Frenchie and the Knights, dying in Marlene's arms.

Marc Spector was revealed to be a descendent of Seth, and fought a final battle against the immortal villain. In the end, Moon Knight sacrificed himself to save Frenchie and the Knights, dying in Marlene's arms. Khonshu resurrected Spector again to counter another plot by Seth, who had recruited Spector's old foes Bushman, the Black Spectre, and Morpheus. Using an idol of Seth, they tried to break up a peace conference at the UN. Spector foiled the plot by destroying the idol. The CIA tried to assassinate Spector because he knew too much about their mind-control programs. With an old flame from the agency, Candace Calder, he exposed the latest refinements in their sinister schemes. Spector journeyed back to the spirit realm to help the Black Panther reconnect with Bast, his own patron deity. Although Nightmare impersonated Khonshu and tried to divert them from their purpose, the real Khonshu helped them finish the quest. Some time later, Spector was approached by Doorman of the Great Lakes Champions (then called the Great Lakes Avengers), who was seeking new blood for his team after Dinah Soar's death and Mr. Immortal's (repeated) suicide attempts. However, Spector mistook Doorman for the Midnight Man, leading to an altercation. Needless to say, Moon Knight did not end up joining the Great Lakes Avengers. Despite his mistrust of teams, Spector joined a group that tried to bring in the Punisher for his excessive vigilantism, and he put up the funds for a headquarters. Zaran wounded Spector severely, and the team's building exploded in the same attack. Drained of money, health, and enthusiasm, Spector retired again. Spector finally exorcised one of his demons when he killed Bushman in mortal combat. He survived, albeit with broken knees. Crippled and despondent, he turned to drugs and alcohol. The Civil War passed him by, although both Captain America and Iron Man tried to enlist him for their sides. Recent encounters have forced Spector to shake off his lethargy, at the price of some psychological stability. He still believes that he is Khonshu's champion, but in his mind Khonshu wears the face of Bushman. So far he has faced a returned Midnight, the Taskmaster, and a revitalized Committee. Moon Knight had to fake his own death when Osborn sent his Thunderbolts to kill him. After that he fled to Mexico using the name Jake Lockley for a while. He eventually met up with the Punisher and the Zapata Brothers to help save Carmen Alcantara from her father's drug cartel. Moon Knight returned to New York after faking his death with Jake Lockley as his dominant personality, but still struggled against his violent nature and was hounded by a small imaginary tormentor resembling a man in the Moon Knight costume with a bird skull who goads him to kill. While trying to walk the path of a hero he made a bold return taking on many criminals but killing none of them, now the people of New York begin to see him as a hero and not a murderous vigilante much to Norman Osborn's disdain. Jake's personality had been one of struggle against the inner demon trying to get him to kill while juggling sobriety. Most recently he was met by the Sentry who asked him "Who do you think you are, a hero?" Later the Sentry took Moon Knight across the city while he saved people and stopped crimes telling Lockley that eventually he will be tested and that he will fail to which Moon Knight replies "So will you". They stared each other down for a moment before the Sentry eventually left. After Norman Osborn's defeat in the siege of Asgard, Steve Rogers was appointed his replacement. He reorganized the Avengers, recruiting Moon Knight to be on his team of Secret Avengers. Their first mission sent the team to Mars. Later on Moon Knight was part of a team that infiltrated a Secret Empire undercity beneath Cincinnati. Some of his teammates, such as Beast, did not trust Spector due to his mental illness. |
