I have to admit as of late, I'm doing more and more 'villains' as part of the 'heroes' role. Fear not, I thought I would feature a character I really put up there as being 'Cosmic' powered, and that is the embodiment of Death, the Saint of Killers.

I like the Saint. I think that the Saint is definitely one of the best things about Preacher, and definitely has one of the best backstories I've read in a while. I think that while the Saint is nigh-unstoppable, the appeal is the core that the Saint is effectively the most underestimated character in all of Preacher, and definitely the one who is perhaps the most lethal in any of Vertigo. Few beings can withstand a nuclear assault and rise up saying 'Not enough gun', nor do few characters get the chance of killing God, the Devil, and pretty much anything, anyone, or any concept in his way. The Saint put out the fires in Hell with the hate in his heart, and he's turned loose as a combination of 'The man with no name' and the Angel of Death.

I don't think any write-up I do could ever really do the Saint justice, but I'm gonna give it a try.

Why the Saint of Killers?
First, he's perhaps the single most bad-ass character to have come out of Garth Ennis, and I rather like Jesse Custer (hell, I might have to do my takes on all of them, as I have (as of the unfortunate Borders Books closing) bought all the missing TPB in my collection. I think that the Saint is probably one of the most dangerous figures in any comic, and would have resolved the entire Blackest Night issue in ten minutes by killing Nekron (which I have absolutely no doubt he is capable of, which says something). Mainly, the Saint makes up the fourth embodiment of Death in the DCU (Cute Goth Death, Black Racer Death, Nekron Death, and Saint of all Killers Death).

So...my take on the Saint:

Powers:
Personification of Death Incarnate: While the Saint of All Killers started as a normal man, he is now the personification of Death, and is capable of killing even Celestial Beings. As the Personification of Death, the Saint is charged to bring death when necessary or ordered, walking the earth (and afterlife) with the duty of Death. The Saint's powers include:
  • Invulnerable: The Saint is completely invulnerable to damage, and does not take damage in the conventional sense. The Saint took a nuclear missile at point blank range and shrugged it off, as well as tank blasts, holy swords, hellfire, and any number of means. The Saint cannot be affected by mystical attacks, and cannot be swayed or controlled through traditional means (Except for some reason, the power of *the Word* generated by the half-demon/half-angel genesis).
  • Heart full of Hate: When the Saint entered hell the first time, he literally froze hell over. The Saint is considered to have the powers of Indomitable Will at CL3000, and radiates the intense coldness of his blackened heart. Any demon that tries to strike the Saint freezes, including to and not limited to Lucifer.
  • Mystical Sense: Similar to Cosmic Awareness/True Sight, 360 degree vision, The Saint cannot be blindsided or surprised, and can easily determine the true nature of someone or something simply by looking at it.
  • Intimidation: The Saint can intimidate even the most cosmic of beings with CL3000 ability, forcing a psyche FEAT from even galactic/cosmic/heavenly beings. When Mortal, this ability was with the Saint at am (50) ability.
  • Immovable: The Saint cannot be moved by anything if he doesn't want to move, as shown with both Cassidy hitting him with the car and the Tank firing on him point-blank range.
  • Tracking: The Saint can track a person through heaven, hell, or any dimension with Un (100) ability, and if a specific target is named, can follow a trail no matter how old or condition.
  • Dimensional Travel: The Saint can move between Heaven, Hell, or Earth easy enough with CL1000 ability. It is assumed the Saint can move to other dimensions as well.

The Walker Pistols: The Saint wields two pistols forged from the sword of death itself, and are legendary weapons that he uses expertly. The Walker Pistols have the following abilities:
  • The Pistols never need to be reloaded, and fire as often as the Saint needs to.
  • The pistols never jam, and never misfire
  • The pistols are indestructible, and cannot be destroyed through any means short of cosmic Armageddon.
  • Anyone who touches the pistols must make a Psyche FEAT of Am (50) or better. Those that make it see all of the people ever killed by the Saint. Those that don't or have a Psyche above Gd (10) are driven catatonic for 1-10 rounds. Those with Psyches below Gd (10) are pretty much catatonic, permanently.
  • The Pistols never miss an intended target.
  • The Pistols ignore force fields, body armor, invulnerability, high heavenly powers, or anything like that.
  • The Pistols *kill* whatever they hit, forcing an immediately Endurance FEAT at CL5000 intensity or die. If the being has Endurance above Cl5000, they must make a Red FEAT at Pr (4). Note: The Saint will actively spend karma to get a Red FEAT - it's pointless, but heck, it's the Saint.
  • The Saint can never be separated from the pistols.
  • The Pistols are line-of-sight, although the Saint does not actually have to see the target, he simply needs to be within four areas and know where the target is.

Contacts:
Not even Death is the Saint's contact.

Limitations:
The Saint has many limitations:

1. The Saint is fueled by hate, and can be reasoned with if his personal grudges are brought up. This was used by Jesse Custer towards the end of the series.

2. The Saint is a physical entity: While invulnerable to damage and completely incapable of being swayed, he still must obey some of the laws of physics. When a mountain was dropped on him, the Saint had to take time to dig himself out. The Saint still has to travel (usually by foot or by his undead horse) to get places, and the Saint is often simply mistaken as a normal.

3. The Saint is downright infamous in all mystic circles, because the Saint never forgets an insult, and never forgets a wronged. The Saint is completely incapable of feeling anything but hate, and is dedicated to usually one single goal at a time.

You know, I see things apparently that aren't there.

For years, I've called him 'The Saint of all Killers', when it's really 'The Saint of Killers'

Yep, I'm seeing an 'all'
