Character Creation Challenge

#charactercreationchallenge

Create one character a day through the month of January. I don't have the time to pull together a full PC for different games, but I'm going to hit up my archives for PCs, stubs of PCs, or figments of PCs.

The days I skip will be because I'm pursuing other Old School TSR games.

Feedback always appreciated!

Sten Knudson
Asgardian Wrestling Mage (MSRPG Advanced, Ultimate Powers Book, Realms of Magic)

Sten's father was a blacksmith in service to Karnilla, Queen of Nornheim. His mother was killed during the frost giant incursion into Nornheim. When Karnilla retook Nornheim, she noted Sten's nascent magical talent. Sten was made an magical assistant in Karnilla's household. But after some time, Sten's studies plateaued and Karnilla deemed further lessons not worth the effor. Sten petitioned for release of service, and Karnilla granted it. Sten chose to migrate to Midgard. Once there, his mystic studies blossomed with exposure to Midgardian magics. With these newfound abilities, Sten settled in New York City to seek his fortune.

This one I actually rolled up randomly. It turned out remarkably well for random generation.

Trisdun
"Helmut Schoenenberger," a Swiss historical re-enactor living in Great Britain.
Terran Eternal

Trisdun is practically an Eternal teenager. Born during King Arthur’s reign, he has grown up through the European Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Enlightenment. For a time, he was in The Forgotten One’s custody, where he learned wrestling and honed his physique. He still keeps in contact with his old teacher.

Trisdun has always been fascinated with smithing; he enjoys working with his hands. While he knows his way around a machine shop, Trisdun prefers working a forge, using the centuries- and millennia-old smithing techniques. Five hundred years practice have given him just enough time to start learning his craft, in his opinion.

Tridsun’s current identity is Helmut Shoenenberger, a Swiss national currently living in Great Britain and working among the living history and re-enactment communities. Five hundred years have also given Trisdun enough familiarity with human financial systems that he can live comfortably while pursuing his interests.

Trisdun has met Captain Britain both personally and professionally. They are not best friends, but are more than acquaintances. Each would feel comfortable calling on the other if in need.

"John Andrew Brown"
Normal human
Consulting psychologist for the US Marshal Service

Dr. John Andrew Brown is a respected psyhologist specializing in criminal behavior and super-powered psychology. He's frequently called on by parents of newly-manifested mutants or victims of mutating events. Dr. Brown has a track record of calming anxious parents and terrified victims. His success rate at calming his patients has even been commented on by Charles Xavier, a world-renowned authority on mutants.

Dr. Brown also regularly consults with the US Marshal Service in concert with their activities against super-villians. Here, again, his track record has been so invaluable, Dr. Brown has occassionally taken part in field operations against super-villians. While not a sworn peace officer, Dr. Brown has been temporarily deputized several times by the US Marshal Service while pursuing super-villians. His conduct has upheld the highest standards of his regualr profession and his deputized service.

Dr. John Andrew Brown is big fat liar whose pants are on fire. But he has to lie; his life depends on it.

Yoh-Rew is a pink Kree. He is a civilian scientist and a fugitive from the Kree Empire. Yoh-Rew fled to Earth to escape persecution and pervesion of his talent. He requested asylum from the US government. When it was grante, Yoh-rew was placed in the Witness Protection Program. Since then, he has established his practice as Dr. John Andrew Brown and stuck to the straight and narrow. He is exactly what he seems: a Good Doctor.

But occasionally, his new identity has a price: his Witness Protection handler calls him in to consult on a case. The US Marshal Service is the point organization for pursuing fugitives from justice and providing protection to witnesses against those fugitives. Yoh-Rew treats the consultations as an extension of his regular practice. But field work is an opportunity for adventure!

This one is more of a stub, because something else has got my attention today.

Head-canon for this character is a small bookstore in Daredevil's Hell's Kitchen. He's reached an..."understanding" with Wilson Fisk. The character acknowledges the Kingpin's power, but has negotiated a bit of autonomy, strictly in regards to his business. Fisk has no desire to share his power with demons or other supernatural powers, so Felton has the tiniest bit of freedom. Felton pays more protection money than average (freedom has a price), but gets a 15 minute warning before any "inspection." Additionally, one small safe is off-limits to any of Fisk's inspectors, save Fisk himself.

Interesting! I, too, have a shape shifting telepath lying around. It's more of a stub right now, but it goes in a completely different direction.

Cho-Tallon is a refugee from the Lemurian City of Toads. His clan and gene-line have long been persecuted for blending magic with technology. But the lastest purge was too much for; the family fled into Subterranea. Cho stumbled through to the surface world in Latveria. Baron von Doom decided the refugee was polite enough to live and useful enough employ.

Cho bided his time and served faithfully until an incident with the Strucker Twins and Fenris terrorist organization. When they attacked Latveria, Cho stood with the Baron to repulse the attack. Von Doom rewarded Cho with Latverian citizenship and autonomy. Cho claimed a Fenris battlesuit as a reward. The Baron graciously provided an image inducer and a letter of introduction to Reed Richards, and let Cho travel West.

Cho immediately became embroiled in the complex relationship between Latveria and Fantastic Four, Inc. He’s interacted positively with the Fantastic Four, but he isn’t trusted. However, Cho is no super-villain, so he has not been imprisoned.

Recently, Cho moved to Chicago. Cho setup shop as a repair-man and started tinkering with his Fenris battlesuit. He has been altering the basic battlesuit with Deviant runic electronics. Cho debuted as the armored vigilante Rune, coming to the Latverian consulate’s attention when he disrupted a Hydra plot to destroy the consulate.

Cho-Tallon appears as a faun from Classical Greek mythology, though he has humanoid, rather than goat-shaped, legs. His fur is a soft tan, his eyes are a deep brown, and his English has a slight gravelly-accent. When using his image inducer, Cho-Tallon appears as human male of Baltic ancestery in his 30s. Due to his Deviant heritage, he is actually twice that old.

Character Creation Challenge: Jan 27: MSHRPG Advanced, Dragon Magazine

Dragon Magazine #197 had an excellent article titled "Heroes of the Streets Arise" addressing the sudden influx of normal human costumed heroes in the early 90s. It was a reversion in may ways to the origins of the "mystery men" of the 40s and the Golden Age of comics. The variant rules are meant for "street-level" heroes and super-spies like SHIELD agents, not for Hulkbusters or facing Heralds of Galactus.

That type of gaming appeals to me, so I created Sisu.

Ilmari is from a semi-traditional family of Finnish immigrants to the US. Over the last 150 years, they have assimilated but maintained their heritage. Finns have a reputation for stubborness like that.

Ilmari enlisted into the US Army to get an education, like many of his relatives. While in, he learned to shoot, to fight, to *really* turn a buck, and somehow acquired an MA in chemistry. Ilmari was honorably discharged and returned to his rural home. But he found that he wasn't satisfied there any longer, so he packed up and moved to Chicago. He's returned to investing and been relatively successful there. But Ilmari hasn't been able to get his chemistry consulting career off the ground. He's faced too much interference from local gangs looking for protection money and local mafiso looking for a share of his business. Ilmari has been unable to get any traction from local law enforcement, so he's disguise himself and taken the fight to them to relieve his frustration.

Only time will tell if Sisu makes a difference or goes to far and becomes what he hates.

In spite of my late start and frequent double-posting, I successfully completed the challenge! Postmortem takeaways:
PRO: I completed the challenge, I revisited and expanded a bunch of old ideas, and I need to get a real blog.
CONS: I really don't have that many Old School TSR games so variety was lacking, I need to start earlier and post consistently, and LiveJournal sucks for this type of blogging.
