It appears the trouble occurred because of a corrupt cache file on the server. To reduce server load, the forum software saves certain pages in a cache, and as long as those pages don't change, it continues to serve them from the cache rather than querying the database over and over every time someone views a page that hasn't changed.
Presumably the cached file was corrupt because when I cleared

Chat's a little funny at the moment, but it is working. We have considered discontinuing it, though, because it's not used very much.

Many people were noting that emails from the server stopped getting through some time ago. At this time, we believe we're able to maintain some semblance of server security and still reduce the incidence of third-party email providers filtering mail coming off the ClassicMarvelForever.com domain.
What this means for the community

I know it's been four and a half years since you asked about this, and I don't know if anyone else has mentioned it since, but for what it's worth, the wording that goes along with the "Discussion" forum has been updated to reflect that it's general discussion, not just strictly Marvel-related topics.

Good afternoon everyone,
As Skycutter mentioned, there are some things going on with the site. We've had some issues on the server that are being taken care of, but it's a process. I apologize for having the non-forum parts of the site down for so long. Everything should be up and working soon, but again, this is a process.
In the meantime, any weird problems that you continue to encounter, fee

Because I didn't get to see any of the posts, can anyone describe the type of content/links in the post, and what user name was posting that stuff?
It could be that someone's account got hacked, though that's unlikely. It could also be a spambot that is able to legitimately log in and solve the antispam tests. It could even be that a blackhat SEO company hired a bunch of "mechanical turks" at $1

Hi everyone. I know you all probably thought I was dead or something, but really I just haven't been around as much because everything seemed so stable for a while, so I drifted off and stopped paying attention. My apologies to anyone who has private messaged me and never received a response. I haven't been checking in on things except when Skycutter tells me there's a problem.
It sounds like th

I understand I'm behind about six months, but I've done what I could to make this happen for you, Chronomancer. I think it is a great idea.

Because the chat system and the forum system were never meant to be integrated, I had to hack something together to show people in the chat. The unfortunate downside is it will only properly show when there is more than one person in chat. I can't remember the details, because this change was made so long ago, but it was done this way because any other way would hammer the database server and mak

The site currently runs on Phorum.
We have not yet looked into changing the Phorum software to something else like phpBB, but if we do, we could end up starting from scratch, and having another archived forum. Ideally, there'd be a good way to port everything over, but I wouldn't know without checking into it first.
Some functionality could change as well, because some stuff has been custom-cod

Are there still broken links? To fix these, we'll have to know exactly which ones are broken.
Thanks!

The Lex's Marvelites page went down because the code on the angelfire page actually loads data from an old member.xoom.com account, and xoom.com is no longer in business as a free web host... so all their member data is gone as far as I know.

Sorry, I mistakenly thought that mods were kind of like the tour guides of Classic Marvel Forever. Folks who were part of the hierarchy of overall site management. I didn't realize their only job is roaming the forum.
The forum is not the only community resource. Is there no one who cares to manage anything at all outside the forum? I haven't been around in a while, so I don't know how (or if) t

New profiles are input through a Content Management System. What I did was create one, then I would just duplicate it, edit it, and copy/paste in the information from the old profile, then save it. Then start over again by duplicating it, and changing it. Over and over. It gets old, and it will get old for anyone who is doing it up until it's done. Once it's done, though, it's done.

I don't know why this hasn't been made a priority, but anyone who had stepped forward either didn't work out, or someone didn't get back in touch with the potential volunteer. I considered just putting instructions up publicly, but it's probably not a wise idea to let the general public into the back-end where they can potentially mess up profiles that have already been done.
I can write up some

Am I correct to assume this problem has already been fixed? I can't find anywhere that doesn't have the date spelled out. I know I've been gone a long time, but I haven't heard from The Skycutter in forever, and just sort of lost track after a while.

How many pages would it require? If you could scan just whatever's missing, I may be able to incorporate it into the current PDF. If the whole thing is not too many pages, you could scan the pages individually and save them as separate PDFs if possible, then I can merge them. I'm not sure how in-demand these maps are, but anything we can do to complete a collection is good!

There is now a lovely Sue Storm on the front page inviting users to chat. Eventually I think we should change out the chat system to something more awesome, but like everything else, that will take some real time...

How upset are you going to be if I jack one of your pieces and use it in a derivative work on the front page of this web site? Sue Storm looks pretty inviting, so I thought maybe she'd like to coax people into the chat room. If you have any objection, I'll use something else. Either way, thanks for submitting your artwork - it's great!

What's the message number? It could be that the message was lost in oblivion somehow, or maybe we need to check directly in the database. If it exists, I should be able to locate it.

Hate to say it, guys, but it looks like it's been a Hostmonster issue. They've been so great; I don't know why all of a sudden we're having so many database issues now. Everything on my end is looking good. Sorry again for my long absence. Things with me are crazy right now.

Civet, I'm not sure I could have said it better myself. You are not out of line at all.
If I may now add my own two cents:
Dead Sidekick is correct that he can start up another thread if this one gets locked. Whether it's morally correct to do so according to the general rules of this forum is another matter. One that is not going to be discussed here and now. If any of you feels that DS's stat

Guys,
As far as I know, we can't even get anyone to volunteer to help with the new character profiles, even though the new profile editor is in place.
If we could get help just transferring all the old profiles to the new system (data has to be entered manually - sorry), then we'd be all set. Once we had all the profiles going, we could start taking individual requests to add new pictures/illus

tystates, you don't have the attachment section pictured? That would definitely be a problem, because attachments are enabled in the forum settings for all registered (and logged in) users.
Does anyone else have the same problem?

Another feature:
Say you're discussing a movie. Perhaps you go see Ironman 2 before everyone else. If you want to discuss it, but there are spoilers, you can actually use the spoiler button in the tool bar (it's a little eye icon with a red 'X' over it).
Like so -
Spoiler Alert!
Hide spoiler
And that concludes the spoiler.

NEW BBCODE OPTION:

LIST ITEM ONE LIST ITEM TWO
Unfortunately, we don't have the time or the resources right now to fix how it auto pops back up to the beginning of the draft. The best I can recommend for now is writing the bbcode yourself instead of relying on the toolbar for things like italic and bold, which is just [ i ] and [ /i ], and [ b ] and [ /b ] (without the extra spaces I put
