I remember reading Magnus: Robot Fighter comics as a kid... and they were way way too "adult" for my impressionable 5 year old head. I don't remember much about the plots, but the artwork was simply amazing.

I always thought it was funny that the robots always said "skreeeeeeeeee!" when they died.

Hello, I was wondering if anyone has done a Mimic write up (my X-Team is currently facing the brotherhood and thinks it's magneto attacking, but it's completely not. He's using Telekinetic powers and Mystiques shape changing right now, but I don't know what else to have him do.

Depends on which Mimic you're referring to. The Exiles version (the more frequently seen one and talked about compared to the original 616 version) I have a write-up for here [www.classicmarvelforever.com] whereas the 616 version has had some modifications over the years, some apparently for no other reason than to make him more like the Exiles version.

The Classic Mimic of Earth-616 would automatically copy the super-powers of anyone that got within 10' of him and retain them for up to I think five miles away from them before they'd fade, and he's also mimic RIP along with FASE. This actually worked with normal humans (gave him quite an ego that carried over after he copied his first superhuman) but naturally it's not as obvious or significant compared to being around beings with superhuman attributes.

I believe the 616 Mimic has also established that he has permanent access to the Original X-Men's powerset as well.

I can remember him displaying those powers in the reboot of Machine Man years ago, when he was restarted with Sentinel Technology (after being very ignominiously treated like trash to dispose of at a dump after his heroic sacrifice). I wasn't sure though if he had those permanently and could also copy new powers or what, since he wasn't automatically copying the other mutants in the area, like Sebastian Shaw. I think I preferred him more distinct from the Exiles version although I imagine at least some problems with him came from being able to stand in a spot like Genosha or the Morlock Tunnels before the genocide and gather up hundreds of power templates making him impossible to realistically defeat. That and a foolish move to make him more like the Exiles version in general because of his popularity, forgetting that it's Exiles Mimic's personality and heroic nature that makes him popular not his more limited Mimicing abilities.

You're quite welcome, glad to be of help. If you look around you can find a thread in the Discussions section devoted to people's considering what super-heroes they'd have copied in Mimic's place, with a lot of speculation on what would be the best balanced set of templates for him. Just remember the power rank just reflects the difficulty of a chosen target in resisting being copied, it doesn't limit the max rank of anything he copies. Not that too many have resisted his powers; with Phoenix being one of the few with the power to block him.

When Mimic gains the powers of other superhumans (just by being in their presence) does he automatically know he's gained those powers, and does he necessarily know how to use them?

[Sorry, not all that familiar with Mimic's limitations, if any]

Depends on the Mimic, the Exiles Version has to consciously choose to copy a target's powers, and his own abilities lets him analyze to some degree the powers he's copying. He also seems to intentionally choose powers that don't require practice to become proficient in (although he met his what-if counterpart who chose evil over good and the evil version had no problems going with powers that required intensive practice like Blink's Teleportation or Magneto's Magnetic powers).

Earth-616 version would sense he'd suddenly acquired new powers and that a superhuman was nearby, which is how I believe he located the original X-men after encountering Jean Grey and Scott Summers in their civilian IDs in a restaurant or bar. He had no choice about copying the powers in question but had some idea what they were, although would lack the perhaps years of intensive experience in using them some have. He seemed to have enough basic control though that he didn't go unleashing the powers wildly after gaining them. Later iterations might be more proficient and able to copy those powers and the associated power stunts learned through effort on the original's part, but not sure. There was even a short period where he was a composite of Wolverine and the Hulk (as someone reminded me about), having their combined powers before he was reset once again by new writers.

Right now he's got Mystique, Pyro, Blob, Toad, and one of my players (a telekinetic master), and they just found out it wasn't Magneto when they checked the mind of an out cold Dukes (the only villain who didn't get away). I've read alot of comics from the mid/late 90's, so I tend to use their world, like Magneto being out of the Brotherhood. In fact, neither is Mystique, and she got tired of Mimic and helped the team fight him. This site is awesome because I can use a ton of pre-made character's and even got a few DC should I decide to do the Marvel Vs. DC thing, though in my mind Marvel wins every time.

An odd mix of powers, but copying an entire team of characters is fairly standard (Exiles Mimic was an exception given he didn't copy the powers of anyone else on the team) and it does give some surprises from the diversity. A good time period to select from and earlier, and glad our site here is proving so helpful to you, we're glad to be of help.

I used all but Pyro/Blob, he just had them for sake of not wasting power, and I only used Toad's leap ability right after Toad so's to make my players think a bit. He could've really flown, but I want them to figure things out without giving away obvious clues.

Given the physical side-effects of Blob's powers they ought to be a bit more obvious, and he does make for a good villain since he can switch up his powers and you can never be sure from encounter to encounter whose powers he's running around with.

True, but she can't conceal mass, and Blob's powers come with a lot of that. But as long as it's working out and everyone's having fun fudging a few things here and there isn't a bad thing.

Wow, one of your players can actually manipulate magnetism?! eye popping smiley winking smiley

What kind of rank does the PC have? I assume considerably lower than Magneto but perhaps not, not knowing what kind of ranks are common in your game.

I think that's what I said; the only people he never copied were his teammates. Well other than during the short period where he was being augmented by that Brood Queen Egg, at which point he was copying everyone in range so was staking almost 2 dozen super-humans at that point, including the fledgling FF from one alternate Reality.
