Try telling that to Conan.

Build a team out of Superman

I don't think I've seen anyone suggest this as a team creation challenge: look at a list of all of Superman's various powers (Flight, super-speed, invulnerability, etc) and split the powers up to create a team possessing some of those powers. So what kind of team would you build using only the super-powers that Superman has and no one hero duplicating a power held by another (outside of those things you can't help, given required secondary super-powers is still applicable).

This is a neat idea. I may take a crack at this. What write up for Superman are we using for this?

No particular write-up, just the standard powers as seen in classic Silver Age Superman.

-Kryptonian Physiology: Exposure to Yellow sun solar energy alters Superman's Kryptonian physiology, it allows Class 1000 Solar Absorption and Storage that provides Superman with mass amounts of energy that support all of his increased physical attributes and god-like powers. He may direct this stored energy to enhance the following abilities:
â—¦Invulnerabilities: Superman has Class 1000 resistance to Heat, Cold, Fire, Corrosives, Radiation, Toxins, and Disease. His body's cells protect him internally as well so drinking a vial of acid wouldn’t even harm his insides.
â—¦True Invulnerability: Superman's dense Kryptonian body provides him with Unearthly (100) protection from Physical and Energy attacks.
â—¦Force Field: Superman possesses a Bioeletric Aura {Force Field} that surrounds his body a few millimeters from his skin. Unearthly (100) protection from Physical and Energy attacks, range: Contact. The proximity of this field to his skin means that loose clothes, for example, may be burned off of him, while clothes that are close to his body are protected by the "Bioeletric Aura" Field; It is also implied that he can unconsciously extend this field to an undetermined extent to protect a greater area, allowing him to carry huge objects within the Earth's atmosphere and without gravity or inertia tearing them apart.
â—¦True Flight: Superman is able to defy gravity and fly at Shift-Z airspeeds in earth's atmosphere, he can fly at Class 3000 speed in space.
â—¦Self-Sustenance: Superman can survive upon the yellow sun solar energies stored within his body, he may survive in a vaccuum or underwater without food, water, or air as if he possessed the Shift-Y (250) Self-Sustenance power in its permanent effect form. Superman does not need to eat, but does so out of social custom, convention, and / or pleasure.
â—¦Torquasm-Vo: This ancient Kryptonian warrior discipline shifts his consciousness on a higher plane. He can fight an enemy in a purely mental realm with Amazing (50) ability.
â—¦Heat Emission-Eyes: Superman can emit his body's stores of solar radiation through his eyes causing Unearthly (100) rank Heat damage with a 10-area range. He is able to make wide or focused beams.
â—¦Hyper Speed: Superman is fast. He possesses hyper speed at Unearthly (100) rank.
â– Substitute for Fighting for multiple attacks and evading. May make up to 4 combat actions per round.
â– Substitute for Agility for dodging and catching projectiles.
â– Substitute for Intuition for initiative.
â– May reach maximum flight or groundspeed in one round and has no penalties making high-speed maneuvers or starting or stopping suddenly.
â—¦Hyper Breath: Superman can exhale Monstrous (75) strength winds at a range of 3-areas. Each area thereafter is at -1CS in intensity. He can also emit Amazing (50) intensity cold.
â—¦Total Recall: Unearthly (100)
â—¦Recovery: Superman's body continues absorbing solar radiation even after death. This energy may eventually return him to life making it virtually impossible to kill him. Allowing Superman the following powers: Regeneration, Self Recovery, and Self Revival at Shift-Y (250) rank.
-Superhuman Senses: Superman heightened senses as below:
â—¦Enhanced Hearing: Unearthly (100)
â—¦Microscopic Vision: Monstrous (75)
â—¦Telescopic Vision: Unearthly (100)
â—¦Infrared Vision: Amazing (50)
â—¦Penetration Vision-X-rays: Unearthly (100), Lead: Superman cannot see through lead with his X-ray vision.
-Power Boost: Superman can direct his body’s stored solor energies into his Strength, Force Field, and Hyper Speed raising them as high as +2CS. It is an instantaneous boost and will be used when the challenge calls for it, all at once, or one ability at a time. He would normally raise +1CS, then +2CS in the initial boost or he can boost immediately to Shift-Y (250) if he needs to. To activate an increase Superman must make an Endurance FEAT.
â—¦White result is heightened rank for only 1 round, after he drops back to normal levels.
â—¦Green result sustains heightened rank for 2d20 round.
â—¦Yellow result keeps him at his heightened ranks for 5d50 turns
â—¦Red result would keep him at heightened levels for 10d100 turns.

Ok posting this here, so that I may reference for my team build.

Building as Marvel characters on the heroic side, although classic Superman doesn't have any bio-force field, the warrior discipline thing, solar recovery, or power boost. His powers were also just on/off if he was exposed to a yellow sun he was super-powered until exposed to a red sun no solar storage and power tapering off.

Should I have to note that having a Superman analogue on the team kind of goes against 'a team of characters who have just parts of Superman's power lottery winnings', since said analogue has all the powers?

So many possibilities. How about a team designed around international emergencies. Natural disasters and some man made ones like Fukishima. A team of people who have the backgrounds and training to tackle top problems. Meteorologists, geologists, Nuclear physicists, engineers but with various super powers and equipment to help them.

I like the idea of building a team around dealing with natural disasters, like earthquakes and floods.

Powers perfect for a natural disaster team.
Elemental Based since most natural disasters are element based.
  • Weather Control
  • Water Control
  • Earth Control
  • Fire Control
  • Air Control

Other useful Powers for this team:
  • Biophysical Control/Healing
  • Teleportation/Portal
  • Telelocation(finding missing people)
  • Radiation Control(Fukushima/Chernyobal)
What powers do you think?

Unfortunately if you're going by canon characters you'll almost never see anyone with Biophysical Control/Regeneration (which is better than the Healing version, it allows you to regenerate missing body parts, likely very critical for disaster relief).

Super-Strength is generally useful in a variety of situations including disaster relief, Phasing (enter into a collapsed building or other area to search for and remove survivors), Energy Duplicates (it explicitly includes an example of using it for rescue efforts in finding people), and various invulnerabilities (so you can be unharmed by things like forest fires and chemical releases).

Catalytic Control is an unsung value for such things, since it can let you prevent chemical reactions at a toxic release that would otherwise injure or kill people (or cause reactions that render the waste harmless). Heck Digestive Adaptation so you can consume dangerous materials, and Lung Adaptability so you can ignore the problems of toxic chemical releases, and finish it off with Body Adaptation so you can adapt to any dangerous environment.

I'll take a stab at this. It may not be the most powerful team, or the sexiest, but it's one that stems from childhood. One that was very enjoyable.

Team Name:
Vanguard

Base Of Operations:
Stark Hydrosphere, Lake Michigan, United States.

Roster:
Captain America (Steve Rogers). Primary Role: Team Leader and Strategist.
Iron Man (Tony Stark). Primary Role: Engineering and Technology.
Bruce Banner. Primary Role: Physician and Scientist.
Black Widow (Natasha Romanova). Primary Role: Espionage and Reconnaissance.
Renegade. Primary Role: Security and Maintenace.
Pepper Pots: Primary Role: Administration and Public Relations.

A few words on what this is based on. This group is one I had when I got the Basic MSH set in the mid 80's. This is in no part based on any canonical history. I wanted a group that was powerful but not ridiculously so. This was also a group with a lot of weaknesses that kept them grounded. Rogers was still dealing with being a "man out of time". With the advent of 80's technology I thought it would be compounded. Stark was an alcoholic, something he constantly had to deal with. This menaced him several times in the comics but to my knowledge hasn't appeared in the movies. Potts being in love with Stark and seeing him in constant danger was pretty stressful. Romanova at this time was being hunted by the Soviets. The Iron Curtain had not yet fell and she was always looking over her shoulder. Banner was literally free of the Hulk. They had become two seperate beings and Stark had given him a real home for the first time in years. Renegade was a highly sophisticated robot with an above average artificial intellegence.

It was a good, living group that I had for a long time. They didn't walk around in costume all the time. They weren't super heroes 24-7. They ate together, lived as people together and looked out for each other. Things would get testy now and again but they were a TEAM. Anyway that's my group. Hope you enjoyed the stroll down memory lane.

"Most regular superhero books are designed to go on forever; of course, very few of them do, but the point is they are trying to throw mud against the wall and hope it will stick, and most of it slides off." Garth Ennis.

Well, as far as I can recall, the movies have shown Tony Stark to be a drinker in all of the Iron Man movies as well as in the Avengers movie, too, but the closest the films have come to "alcoholic" is when Tony pretended to be drunk (Iron Man 2) in order to "fight" Rhodey and give the other man the opportunity to "take" the suit that would allow Rhodey to become War Machine.

However, I haven't had the occasion to see Iron Man 3 yet, so I don't know if his drinking is shown to be a factor for anything in that one.
